For a small village, Kingston has plenty to offer. Only 30 minutes drive from Queenstown airport and 25 minutes from the bottom of the Remarkables skifield road, it’s a great place to stay to experience all the activities Queenstown has to offer, without the crowds.

For years Kingston’s been known as the home of the Kingston Flyer, the vintage steam train built in 1873. The flyer is currently for sale, and will not be operating for the foreseeable future, but the train and carriages are still on site for you to visit. Here’s a small sample of things to do in Kingston:

  • Golf, a public 9 hole golf course
  • Tennis
  • Bowls
  • Walking Tracks
  • Around the Mountains Cycle Trail, free to use. We have 29er hard tail mountain bikes for hire, if required.
  • Welcome Rock Walking and Cycle Trail, small entry fee
  • Hunting
  • Fishing (with some of the best trout fishing rivers in the world!
  • Boating
  • Lakeside activities, enjoy a walk, picnic or swim
  • Stargazing, there is little light pollution so when there’s no moon, you get exceptional star gazing opportunities, including viewing the Aurora Australialis, the Southern Lights.
  • Skiing and Snowboarding, we’re only 25 minutes to the bottom of the Remarkables skifield road.

The lack of light pollution also mean it’s an amazing place to stargaze or see the Aurora Australis (southern lights). Check out this 2 time-lapse videos of the southern lights by our neighbour Warren of The top one is from May 2017, the bottom from March 2015. Enjoy…
